Rounded or bull-nosed edges on every corner a running child can meet, no sharp handles at head height, tall units anchored to the wall so a climbed drawer cannot topple, socket guards, and shutters on soft-close hardware so no finger gets caught. It is the least glamorous part of the drawing and the first thing we detail.

Low-VOC paints and water-based sealers, laminates and PU finishes that have fully cured before the room is handed over, and no loose felt or fabric a toddler can pull off and put in a mouth. We also let the room air out properly before your child sleeps in it, rather than rushing the handover.

By putting the daily things below their shoulder. Open bins and low drawers for toys, a hanging rail at a height they can reach so they learn to put a shirt away, and books facing forward on a shallow ledge. The quilts, the outgrown clothes and everything you do not want touched go on the loft shelf above.

That is the test we design against. The desk goes in at a proper adult height with an adjustable chair, the wardrobe rail is set on shifting pegs so it can be dropped or raised, and the colour lives in bedding, paint and pinboards — the parts you can change in a weekend — while the joinery stays neutral.

Yes, and it works better than most parents expect. A bunk or a pair of storage beds, two separate study surfaces, and split wardrobe sections so each child has a door of their own. The one thing we insist on is that each of them gets a private drawer and their own light switch.

Only when the theme is built in permanently. A princess bed frame or a car-shaped headboard is furniture you will be paying to remove. Put the theme in the wallpaper, the decals and the bedlinen, and keep the built-in joinery calm — the room can then change its mind cheaply, as the child will.
