We count, rather than guess. Hanging metres for long and short garments, drawer volume for folded clothes, a lockable section for documents and jewellery, and a shelf run for the luggage and quilts that otherwise end up on top of the almirah. That count sets the carcass width — not the other way round.

It is the only wall you never look at, and the first one every visitor does. It also has to hold the bedside lights, the switches and the sockets that make the bed usable. Treating it as one designed plane — upholstery, fluting or a backlit arch — solves the look and the services together.

In three separate circuits: a soft ambient layer, bedside reading lights that fall on the page and not on your partner’s face, and a low-level night light for the walk to the bathroom. The master switch sits at the door and repeats at the bed — nobody should have to cross a dark room to turn the light off.

In an Indian home, almost always. A hydraulic-lift storage bed swallows the seasonal bedding and the suitcases that otherwise eat a full wardrobe shelf. We specify gas-lift hardware rated for the mattress weight so one person can open it without help.

To a point, and honestly. An upholstered headboard, a rug, heavy curtains and a solid-core door together take the edge off a road-facing bedroom. Where the traffic noise is genuinely bad we discuss the window itself, because no amount of soft furnishing beats the glass.

Yes. A guest room is planned for luggage, a mirror and a socket by the bed — light storage, because nobody stays forever. A parents’ room gets the opposite: reachable shelf heights, no trip edges, a firm seat to dress from, and brighter, glare-free light than a young couple would ever want.
